The Large Magellanic Cloud

LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, located approximately 163,000 light-years away from Earth in the southern sky. It has a diameter of about 14,000 light-years and contains a rich diversity of stellar populations, including young, hot stars and older, cooler stars. The LMC is notable for its irregular shape and its proximity to the Milky Way. Its most prominent feature is the Tarantula Nebula, bottom right.
